After reading your blog and going to youtube to listen to the song myself, I found myself agreeing with you in the respect that Macklemore had some shining moments, and some not so great parts to his song. But I wasn't just thinking about the song; I was thinking about how this song would impact people of all races: what messages it sends to White people, and what messages it sends to people of color, because the song's messages mean different things to different identities. All in all, I give Macklemore credit for making a song - two songs - about white privilege. Did he do it well? Eh, maybe not in some cases because he is speaking for a whole group of people, profiting off of their cause, and doesn't make it personal. He could have mentioned what he is doing outside of his career to be an ally to the Black Lives Matter Movement. It's just an idea, but I didn't feel like he made any personal connections to the movement or gave us insight into his experience with white privilege.
